Luggage transfer

Luggage transfer on the Torres del Paine — W Trek

No bag transfer operates on the W Trek; you carry your own gear for the whole route once you are inside the national park.

What people do instead is leave the bulk of their luggage in Puerto Natales. Hostels and hotels there hold suitcases as a matter of routine, usually free for guests either side of the trek, and it is the standard arrangement. Inside the park the refugios are supplied by catamaran across Lago Pehoé, by horse and by staff carrying loads, and the park authority does not permit commercial bag shuttling along the trails. The one useful exception is the eastern end, where a road reaches the Las Torres sector and a bag can be left there.

The W lies between Lago Grey, Lago Pehoé and the Ascencio valley, and the road stops at the edges. A gravel road reaches Laguna Amarga and the hotel in the Las Torres sector at the eastern end; at the western end the road reaches Pudeto, from where the catamaran crosses to Paine Grande. Between those three points there is only trail: Chileno, Los Cuernos, Francés, Italiano and Grey are foot access. Both arms of the W are out-and-back, so you can leave the pack at camp and walk up to the Torres or into the Valle del Francés carrying almost nothing.

A fully self-sufficient walker carries twelve to sixteen kilos here: tent, sleeping bag and mat, stove, five days of food, and clothing for Patagonian wind that regularly gusts hard enough to knock people over on the exposed sections. Taking half board at the refugios and renting a sleeping bag and mat at each one strips that back to around eight kilos of clothing, water and day gear. It costs considerably more and it is the single decision that most changes how the trek feels, especially on the two long days.

Booking runs in a fixed order and starts early. Park entry is reserved and paid in advance, then refugio and campsite places through the two concessionaires who operate them inside the park, both of which open reservations months ahead and sell out for December to February. Buses from Puerto Natales and the catamaran timetable come next. Only then do you decide what stays in town. Build in slack: a cancelled catamaran, a closed sector or a wind warning rearranges the itinerary, and the refuges are not obliged to move your booking.

What it costs

Storing a case in Puerto Natales is commonly free for guests, or a few thousand pesos a day otherwise. The real cost of a lighter pack is refugio half board plus rented sleeping bag and mat, which together run into tens of thousands of pesos per night. Park entry is separate and is revised annually, so check current fees.

Which stages work

No stage supports bag transfer. Vehicles reach Laguna Amarga and the Las Torres sector at the eastern end and Pudeto at the western end, and the catamaran carries your pack to Paine Grande. Chileno, Los Cuernos, Francés and Grey are reached on foot only, and whatever you sleep with there, you carried in.

Frequently asked

Why can nobody move my bag between refugios?

Because there are no roads inside the W and the park authority does not allow commercial porterage along the trails. Supplies reach the refuges by boat, horse and staff, on their own schedules. Guided groups walk with their own packs too, which is a useful reality check on any offer of a supported W trek.

Where do I leave my suitcase?

Puerto Natales, at the hostel or hotel you use before and after the trek. Nearly every place in town does this and many do not charge guests. Take everything you need for five days into the park, because there is no way to retrieve anything once you have started, and the bus back is a three-hour trip.

How do I cut pack weight without carrying camping gear?

Book refugio beds rather than camping, take half board so you carry no stove or food beyond snacks, and rent a sleeping bag and mat where they are offered. That removes the heaviest items and puts most walkers around eight kilos. It is the expensive option, and in high season it must be booked months ahead.

Can I leave my pack anywhere during the day?

On the two spurs, yes. Both the climb to the base of the Torres from Chileno and the walk into the Valle del Francés from Italiano are out-and-back, and walkers routinely leave the main pack at the refuge or the ranger point and carry water, layers and food. Take valuables and documents with you.
